Britney Spears, Demi Lovato Will Bring 'Serious Wisdom' to 'X Factor'
[info]jhblifestyles

MTV News talks to 'So You Think You Can Dance' cast about Fox's decision to enlist the two pop stars for the reality singing show.
By Jocelyn Vena

NEW YORK — As the fall TV season continues to make news, Fox has had the most buzz thanks to the news that Demi Lovato and Britney Spears will sit down beside Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid as female judges on "The X Factor," replacing Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul.

On Monday (May 14), as talent from many of the network's leading shows lined up to talk to the press at the Fox event, what everyone really wanted to know was how these two artists might fit on the reality competition show.

Given that both have made names for themselves thanks to their own unique charms as pop stars, some of the more seasoned network vets offered up some sage advice for the reality show newbies. MTV News chatted with the folks of "So You Think You Can Dance," in the hours before the presentation where they were confirmed, to get their sage advice for Brit and Demi.

"You know, I don't have any advice for those ladies," "SYTYCD" host Cat Deeley explained. "What I do like about it though is they will be able to absolutely impart some serious wisdom. I love the idea that they've been in the business for so long and since being kids and so quite often they've had successes and they've had failures on things.

"And I think the most important thing is the mistakes we make," she added. "You learn so much from mistakes that you make and I think they'll be able to impart their wisdom to the new kids coming through. I think it's a great booking."

Judge Mary Murphy seemed excited by the chance to run into the girls at Fox-related events, and even shared that she'd love to see dancer Britney make an appearance on her show as well.

"So she would be a good [guest] too if she wanted to pop on over, but I think she's going to be a busy young woman with everything she has going on," she said. "I think we'll tune in to find out what the heck she's gonna say!" she said, going on to share some judging advice. "Just try to speak from the heart and you can't go wrong."

While Murphy and Deeley focused on the positive when it comes to their highly publicized judging spots, Nigel Lythgoe wondered if the singers (Britney, 30, and Demi, 19) might be too young for a mentor-type position.

"Well they've got to look on it as a brand-new show, to be frank. I don't think they need to look at the first season. I think they've got to be honest as they can be," he said of coming in for season two. "They're both artists and artists will always couch any criticism because they know that they've been criticized, so they've got to ignore that.

"They've got to be as honest as they can be with their contestants and just inspire them to be better," he said, before sharing his one hesitation about them.

"My only reservation is they're both young and I do think that mentors should be of an age," he added, joking he fears it might put older experts, like him, out of a job. "I do think mentors have had so much experience before they mentor. At the same time, both of these young ladies have had incredible personal experience and been through so much in their own lives that hopefully they can bring that to the party too. But at the end of the day, they are going to take newcomers and literally push them through a reality television competition. It's tough."

Do you think Demi Lovato and Britney Spears will make good judges on "The X Factor"? Leave your comment below!

Is 'X Factor' The Right Move For Britney Spears?
[info]jhblifestyles

Experts weigh in on whether Spears will find success with her new judging gig.
By Christina Garibaldi

The rumors had been swirling for months, and now, according to reports, the pop princess herself, Britney Spears, will be joining the judging panel on "The X Factor," landing a $15 million deal for one season.

Yet, after 15 years in the public eye, seven studio albums and more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, many are wondering: Is "The X Factor" the right career move for Spears?

"I think it is a good move, actually," Entertainment Weekly writer Tanner Stransky told MTV News. "I think she has so many people on her team watching what she's doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it's the right move right now."

This new role certainly has many advantages. It keeps Spears in the public eye while keeping her close to her family, and it will most likely bring in the big ratings that "X Factor" and Simon Cowell are hoping for. Yet there are some experts who are a little wary of Spears taking a spot on the panel, since over the years, the pop star has been noticeably withdrawn from press, rarely giving on-camera interviews.

"I think everyone is a little concerned, simply because Britney has been very press-shy since she's been in her conservatorship, and everything is incredibly guarded and incredibly controlled," Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard, said. "And there can be uncontrollable moments on 'The X Factor,' and if things are not completely in control and things are not rehearsed, things could go wrong. With a live show, anything can happen, and that can be very exciting but, at the same time, a little worrisome."

Stransky agreed and believes that, while Spears is judging the contestants, viewers will ultimately be judging her.

"Everyone is going to take a close look at her and pay attention to what she says," Stransky said. "She's sort of been so managed on her interviews in the past five years, it's risky."

But Spears' loyal fanbase feels that putting Spears in an environment where anything can happen is actually a good thing, and will show a whole different side of the pop star.

"That's part of the excitement of her being on this: It's unscripted," said Jordan Miller, webmaster for Spears' biggest fan site, BreatheHeavy.com. "We are so used to her reading cue cards and kind of being controlled in that way, so for her to break out of that and to do something that's stepping outside her comfort zone, I think it's a great step for her, career-wise, and for her as a person. I think she's going to do really good. I think she's confident."

And confidence is key when judging a singing competition, but so is experience — which Spears has in spades. For years, fans have listened to her chart-topping music and have seen her on tour, but now they're ready to connect with the star on a new level.

"I think the overall consensus is that people are really excited to see Britney do something new and be able to connect with her a couple times a week on national television," Miller said. "It's exciting for fans to see that she's going to be able to mentor these contestants, because like it or not, Britney does have the 'X Factor,' so it's going to be great to see how she can transcend this into more singers and inspire other people."

Are you excited for Britney Spears to be a judge on "The X Factor"? By Gil Kaufman

While Justin Bieber fans are awaiting the June 19 release of Believe, perhaps they can slake their fever by snatching up some tickets to the singer's upcoming North American tour. Bieber will hit the road for a headlining tour in support of his fourth album on September 29 with a show in Glendale, Arizona, with fans who purchase tickets to the shows getting a chance to pre-order the disc. The "Believe" outing will hit 45 cities before wrapping up in Miami on January 26, 2013, with protégé Carly Rae Jepsen on board as the opening act for the entire run.

"There's a lot of fun stuff," Bieber promised earlier this week
about what fans can expect to see on the tour. "I've been really hard at work in the studio, in the dance studio, just kind of figuring out what I want to do as far as choreography and whatnot. I think the tour's going to be really special. We got a lot of surprises."

The presale for the Fan Club will kick off on May 23, which gives diehards first crack at tickets and some exclusive merchandise. General public tickets will go on sale on June 2 in the U.S. (a day earlier for Canada). VIP packages will also be available, including premium seats, as well as potential meet-and-greet and photo opportunities with Bieber, autographed memorabilia, exclusive VIP merchandise and other perks. Also, $1 from each ticket will be donated to Pencils of Promise, a charity that works to build schools and increase educational opportunities in the developing world, with a goal of building 15 schools around the world for needy children.

While he may be cooking up ways to surprise his fans on the road, Bieber was recently surprised when his video for "Boyfriend"
broke a record for the most views in one day
on YouTube. "It's crazy," he said. "Hopefully it just keeps getting more views and more views. My fans are amazing. I'm very blessed."

Bieber just released the track list
for Believe, confirming that duets with Drake, Nicki Minaj, Big Sean and Ludacris all made the album's final cut. Who Loves Ya, Linux Baby?
[info]jhblifestyles
If there's anything important in this competitive world, it's the ability to tell one's friends from one's enemies. We here in the Linux blogosphere tend to be pretty good at that, but recently a surprising turn of events left us befuddled. Namely: Mozilla's decision to leave Linux support out of the initial release of its upcoming Web Apps marketplace.
